Every neighborhood has a hero, an everyday person who does the right thing for the good of others. Whether they are the firefighters who bravely drive the fire truck at your Opening Ceremonies, or your local shop owner who goes above and beyond to help those in need, these people are helping to make our world a better place. Little League International has partnered with Community Heroes to recognize the more than one million dedicated volunteers in communities around the globe who are doing just that.
The hero archetype is tightly woven into the fabric of American and Western culture, but often bears little resemblance to the iconic heroes that are celebrated on social media, television, and movies. Instead, people choose their own heroes–family members, neighbors, coaches, and teachers–with whom they have a personal connection. Using the framework of social constructionism, this research explores individuals’ experiences with, connections to, and interactions with their own everyday heroes.
Do you know someone who has performed a selfless act of kindness or is known for uplifting the community? Nominate them for the Community Hero award, presented by the Greg Hill Foundation & Chick-fil-A. The winner of this award will receive a plaque and a $500 grant for their league! In addition, they will be featured in a photo-documentary and a public art project. This community-based public art project celebrates the unsung heroes of New York City, neighborhood by neighborhood.
